Vintage Industrial Big Boy Room

While expecting Baby Boy #2, we knew we would have to transition our first son, Brady, to his "big boy room."  We decided to keep the nursery as the nursery; for various reasons, it's better suited as that. Therefore, we knew that when we switched Brady to a "big boy bed" we would transition rooms as well.  We developed a plan:

#1 Pottery Barn Cargo Duvet and Madras Quilt (our big splurge for this room)
#2 Ikea EIVOR CIRKEL Rug
#3 Ikea NYVOLL Dresser
#4  Accessories Inspiration:  Walmart Soleous 12" fan and Restoration Hardware Baby and Child Lamp (I can't find this exact one anymore, but this one is similar)
#5 Restoration Hardware Vintage Canvas Stripe Panels (I DIY'd using IKEA Merete Panels)

(We used Container Store Elfa drawers for extra storage under the IKEA Malm Bed.  The bed is really low to the ground and these were the only containers low enough to squeeze under there.  We use them for extra blankets, sheets, and stuffed animals.)

We didn't expect to have issues transitioning rooms, however, we hyped up the move into the new room just to be sure.  We made the move into the "big boy room" a Christmas day surprise.   Brady was kept out of the room while we painted, built the furniture, and arranged the room leading up to Christmas.

This worked out very well; Brady liked his new room so much Christmas morning that we had a difficult time getting him to come out and open gifts!  Here he is playing trains that morning:

I love the vintage industrial look that is popular right now; however, this look is a significant change from the style in the rest of our home.  So it seemed like our toddler's bedroom was a great place to introduce a few Restoration Hardware-esque accents into our home.  After all, Brady loves all things trains, planes, and automobiles and that theme suites the RH Baby and Child look pretty well.

Also, I feel this room can easily be transitioned as he grows by switching out the bold primary color accessories to to maybe army green and burnt orange accents.  Or, maybe Brady will have an opinion when he is older!

My son loves to build with his Mega Blocks and I thought this wire basket was a fun way to display them and bring in a punch of color in an otherwise monochromatic area of the room.

I really like the look of vintage fans, but we needed a functional and safe fan in this space.  I found this Soleous fan at Walmart.com for about $35 and used the Site To Store option to save on shipping.  Also in the background of this picture is a DIY Canvas Art I put together based on several images I found at Restoration Hardware.  I will post about that, and several other DIY projects in this room, later.

I found the copper lanterns at a thrift store; they are probably reproductions of lanterns used on an old ship (or maybe the real thing?).  At first I thought I would clean them up, but I kind of like the aged look.

My son's Uncle Ricky is a fireman and Brady and his cousin love visits to the fire station; it only seemed natural for Brady to dress up as a fireman for Halloween this year!  

These curtains were DIY based off the the Restoration Hardware Vintage Canvas Stripe Panels .

The large picture is actually a puzzle from Pottery Barn Kids.  The frame I already had (I think it was from Ikea) and sprayed it silver to match the other two frames.  The smaller sketches I picked up at Kane County Flea Market. 

This is a small room, about 10 X 12, and my son likes to play with his toys and read his books in here.  Therefore, we wanted to make his toys, puzzles, and books easily accessible and leave the floor space pretty open.

Grouping the books by like colors helps give the space an organized looked and allows me to keep the often used items on display and easily accessible.

I don't really like this light for this space, but I had it on hand and have yet made a great effort to find one like the Restoration Hardware lamp in my Inspiration Board.

I purchased the red bins from Target to corral together smaller toys and games.

My dad is huge into collecting vintage trains and accessories and let me raid his stash when pulling Brady's room together.  There is a lot more "stuff" where this came from.  I have plans to change up this wall a little bit to fill the empty wall space above the bookshelf.  At that point I will probably include a few more model trains and accessories.

Oh, and you can't have a vintage industrial room without flying fighter jets, can you?

In addition to DIY'ing the curtain panels, we also DIY'd the curtain rod using plumbing pipe.
